DrumIt Five OS V1.10 Overview

Added, improved and / or changed features since OS 1.04. Between parenthesis the related page.

  • DrumIt.dkit file

To allow new settings, the DrumIt.dkit file version is now 1.10. Please note that users who upgrade to OS 1.10 can still read their existing DrumIt.dkit file. When saving any settings, they are automatically saved in 1.10 format.

  • Metronome( UNIT-METR, KIT-SONG )

Each kit can have a metronome. Tempo settings can be between 30 and 280 BPM. Bars can be from 2/4 to 7/4 and 3/8 to 12/8. The sound is common to all kits and can be chosen among any of the sounds in the unit. The decay can be shortened to tighten up the sound.

  • Output Assign( UNIT-NODE )

The direct out of a drum channel can be assigned to any of 8 output busses (or any 4 output bus pairs) or be disconnected. The headphones out can be set to source bus 7 and 8 with the option to set these at a fixed level which is equal to the other 6 line outputs. This configuration allows 8 independent outputs to be routed to an external mixer.

  • Sound Browsing( KIT-DRUM )

One can browse among all drum sound folders. Click the drum sound dial and turn to select a folder.

  • Voice Mode( KIT-ENV )

Each drum channel can be set to play its voices in monophonic mode. This is appropriate for electronic sounds etc.

  • Kit Move( KIT-PROG )

In addition to copying a kit to another program number, it can be moved there instead so the programs in between shift one number up or down. This is useful when sorting kits. For example, the most frequently used kits can be collected together at the beginning of the program list.

  • Undo / Redo( UNIT, KIT )

In unit or kit mode, one can switch the settings between what is in the edit buffer and what is saved on file. This allows to compare the changes being made against the original settings.

  • Effect Unit( KIT-FX )

The first available effect is a multitap echo. It has a maximum of 1 second delay with 2 intermediate taps which can be set at certain fractions of the total delay time. The feedback amount can be set as well. The delay time can be synchronised to the tempo of the metronome.

  • Cymbal Trigger( UNIT-TRIG )

Changed cymbal trigger to allow better separation of cup ( bell ) and bow ( ride ) zones. The cup zone is now detected with hits of relatively high velocity as the cup zone produces a much higher signal amplitude ( the actual trigger level is compensated for this ). The bow zone will trigger correctly with hits of any velocity. There's also a filter to suppress stray triggers from the rack stand.

  • Volume( KIT-VOL )

Each drum channel has a post-volume effect send. The balance is assigned to its own dial.

  • Layer Mode( KIT-ENV )

The sound layer selection depends on the trigger level. It can be set so a fixed layer is played for each trigger level, a variable layer varying around the trigger level or always the top layer. Each layer is always played at a level corresponding to the trigger level.

  • Mixer( UNIT-PREF )

The mixer view can be set to show 3 groups at the time with full group names, all 9 groups at once with just the initial character of the name, or all 9 groups showing the full name for a second when changing the fader bank. There is also a stereo VU meter on the mix page.

  • Mode Select( UNIT, KIT )

Pressing the UNIT or KIT button always selects the first page of each mode ( MIX resp PROG ). To return to a previous visited page, hold MORE and press UNIT or KIT.

  • Remix(UNIT-OUT)

The remix includes all drum channels plus optionally the effect return, the line input, the song and the metronome. Several combinations can be selected in the remix. This allows to have a click or backing track in the headphones main mix, while the remix is without these. Output 1 and 2 and / or the headphones can be set to source the remix.

  • Trig Curve( UNIT-TRIG )

The maximum trigger curves Max1 and Max2 are now totally flat at -6 resp 0 dB trigger level.

  • Envelope( KIT-ENV )

New attack, hold, decay envelope. All times are calibrated in (milli)seconds. The hold parameter allows to create gated sounds.

  • Kit Load( KIT-PROG )

When a new kit program is selected, kit loading starts immediately. If another program is selected while the previous one is still loading, the current kit loading is stopped and the new one is immediately started.

  • Initialise( UNIT-PREF )

The unit and kit settings can be initialised from a backup dkit file.

  • Parameter Names

All parameter names are uppercase. Parameter values are mixed upper- and lowercase. This improves the appearance of the page.

  • File Names

Folder or file names starting with a period are now ignored ( these are most often automatically created by Macintosh programs ).

( DrumIt Five .dkit unit settings )

The DrumIt settings file ( file extension .dkit ) holds the unit settings. 100 kit settings and the program mapping table. If you have changed the original DrumItInit file on the DrumIt unit, you can copy the DrumIt file and rename it to DrumItInit. It is used as backup file to restore settings from within the DrumIt unit ( see the UNIT-PREF page ). When you have made changes to the unit or kit settings and like to use these as backup, remove the original DrumItInit file and copy your own DrumIt file to DrumItInit.
